PlanScan

Augmented Reality Platform for Digital Nomads in Thailand

Graduate Thesis Project · Academy of Art University · 2022

PlanScan is a mobile platform designed for digital nomads seeking the perfect coworking experience in Thailand. With immersive AR features, users can take realistic 360° tours of shared workspaces before booking—helping them make confident decisions from anywhere in the world.

The app offers more than just space discovery. It provides real-time availability, visa and permit guidance, and integrates local events and cultural experiences—making it easier for users to stay productive while connecting with communities on the ground.

PlanScan supports flexible workspace options including private offices, meeting rooms, and 24/7 access via mobile app or keycard. High-speed internet, printing, and scanning services come standard—making each space fully equipped for remote work and events.

Background & Motivation

My passion for online business began in 2005 while studying in the U.S. I spent years researching product-market fit, analyzing trends, and launching e-commerce ventures—including a party supply business that taught me the importance of customer experience and innovation.

While working on my thesis, I saw an opportunity to combine that business foundation with my growing interest in augmented reality. I envisioned using AR to elevate the remote work experience—especially for the growing community of digital nomads.

Through user research and interviews with travelers, coworking space owners, and remote professionals, I explored how technology could solve real-world problems—like workspace uncertainty and cultural disconnect.

PlanScan is the result of that journey: a project that merges AR, UX design, and business strategy to create a smarter, more connected way to work and live abroad.

Development Process

01Research & Discovery

To deeply understand the needs of digital nomads, I conducted qualitative research through interviews and surveys with remote workers, travelers, and coworking space owners in Thailand. This helped define key pain points such as workspace uncertainty, visa confusion, and lack of cultural connection.

02Defining the Product Strategy

I outlined a strategic framework combining three main pillars:
– AR-Enhanced Workspace Tours
– Real-Time Availability & Booking
– Localized Support & Cultural Integration

This formed the foundation for a user-centered app experience tailored to the remote work lifestyle.

03User Journey Mapping & IA

I mapped out multiple user journeys based on distinct goals—booking a workspace, checking visa requirements, or exploring events. This guided the creation of a clear information architecture and feature hierarchy that supported efficient navigation and discovery.

04Wireframing & Prototyping

Using tools like Figma, I developed low-fidelity wireframes to quickly test layout ideas, followed by high-fidelity AR-integrated mockups. Prototypes were tested with target users to refine usability and interaction flow.

05Augmented Reality Integration

I designed AR-based workspace tours using mobile-ready 3D visualization tools. These offered users 360° immersive previews of coworking environments—helping them book with confidence even before arriving in Thailand.

06Visual Design & Branding

The app’s branding was built around the concept of intelligent exploration—balancing tech-forward design with a warm, inviting visual system. A clean UI, purple-toned color palette (#53449F), and sans-serif typography reinforced trust and ease of use.

07Usability Testing & Feedback Loop

The app’s branding was built around the concept of intelligent exploration—balancing tech-forward design with a warm, inviting visual system. A clean UI, purple-toned color palette (#53449F), and sans-serif typography reinforced trust and ease of use.

08Final Presentation & Documentation

The project concluded with a full case study, visual walkthrough, and presentation for the Academy of Art University thesis review committee, showcasing the product vision, user research, design process, and implementation roadmap.
